The P-38 Can Opener and Our Illegal Immigration Patrol

From my last blog, I came to the conclusion that it was necessary to have a working can opener while out on patrols. After all, an army moves on its’ stomach. Upon returning from this four day rain plagued patrol, I did some research and came across a website dedicated to the P-38 can opener. I also ordered 75 of these highly reliable pieces of U.S. made equipment. In 100 years, people will still be opening cans with them.

Our troops were out late on patrols, so I decided to put together a large pot of beef stew. Following my return from taking care of some related business in Tucson, I got busy with dinner. I had hoarded a couple of cans of hard to find government surplus canned beef. I chopped away at the potatoes and carrots and threw them in the pot along with the beef. After a couple of hours of simmering, chow was ready. By morning, there was very little left in the bottom of the pot.

This meal was made possible due to the fact I had a P-38 can opener on my key chain. The brand new dollar store Chinese can opener failed to open even one can. It was promptly discarded.

Be ready when the power goes out. . .

During the WWII, Korean and Vietnam Wars when hungry GI's were ready to dive into their delicious meals of K or C-Rations they used their trusty P-38s to open the cans. No it wasn't the famous WWII fighter plane or a German pistol, it was an amazingly simple little piece of 1-1/2 inch stamped metal that was developed in just 30 days during the Summer of 1942 by the Subsistence Research Laboratory in Chicago.

My letter to James Clarke:

I’m glad I came across your site. In addition to ordering this $3.00 mail in special, I have also ordered can openers that will be handed out to all volunteer personnel that accompany me on my southern Arizona border security patrols in the Coronado National Forest, Buenos Aires National Wildlife refuge and the Sonoran Desert National Monument. We have saved lives, deterred crime and stopped drugs from poisoning our youth.

Thank you,

Harry L. Hughes III

My “Hurricane Special” arrived very promptly and to my surprise, had a few extra can openers included. I am very pleased with the quality service provided.

TSA’s list of prohibited items, including your P-38:

The TSA web page has the following statement that gives the screeners enough leeway to take your treasured P-38 for the common good: The prohibited and permitted items chart is not intended to be all-inclusive and is updated as necessary. To ensure everyone's security, the screener may determine that an item not on this chart is prohibited.

"He who believes in the struggle for existence and in the principle of natural selection, will acknowledge that every organic being is constantly endeavouring to increase in numbers; and thus if any one being vary ever so little, either in habits or structure, and thus gain an advantage over some other inhabitant of the country, it will seize on the place of that inhabitant, however different it may be from its own place." --Charles Darwin
